Equine herpes myeloencephalopathy (EHM) in Quebec, April 11, 2024

Equine herpes myeloencephalopathy (EHM) has been confirmed in Laurentides, Quebec. On April 9, 2024, a 20 year old gelding presented with inability to urinate, discomfort, and colic. On April 10, 2024, the horse was in lateral decubitus and was unable to rise, with paresis of the hind limbs, bladder and anus, and edema of the limbs. The horse was euthanized on April 10, 2024. Infection with equine herpesvirus 1 (EHV-1) was confirmed on PCR on April 11, 2024. The horse was not vaccinated against EHV-1. The stable is under quarantine and biosecurity measures have been implemented by the attending veterinarian.
