Strangles (Streptococcus equi) in Alberta, Aug 7, 2026
Strangles (Streptococcus equi) has been confirmed at a boarding facility in Lacombe County, Alberta, on August 7, 2026. A 9 year old mare showed clinical signs of fever, nasal discharge, lethargy an had ruptured retropharyngeal abscesses into gutteral pouches, on guttural pouch endoscopy. The horse was unvaccinated against Strangles. The horse is recovering and is under voluntary quarantine. Three horses were exposed, one horse had suspected exposure
