Strangles (Streptococcus equi) in Alberta, March 25, 2026

Strangles (Streptococcus equi) has been confirmed in Stettler County, Alberta. On February 12, 2026, a 3 year old Appaloosa gelding used for horse shows presented with mild nasal discharge accompanied by fever. Clinical signs resolved within 10 days. Guttural pouch lavage revealed continued abscesses in guttural pouches with some purulent discharge. Infection with S. equi was confirmed on March 25, 2026. The horse was not vaccinated against Strangles.

Horse is under voluntary quarantine and management of the case, including guttural pouch flushes has been instituted.
