Strangles (Streptococcus equi) in Ontario, August 29, 2025

Strangles (Streptococcus equi) has been confirmed in the District of Rainy River, Ontario. A 12 year old Quarter Horse mare was examined for "choke" due to swollen lymph nodes in the throatlatch area. The horse also had purulent nasal discharge. There were no new horses on the farm. Testing was positive for Streptococcus equi by PCR. The horse is recovering. Two additional horses were exposed.
