Strangles (Streptococcus equi) has been confirmed in the Regional Municipality of Waterloo, Ontario. Two Standardbred horses, located on a private farm, had nasal discharge and lymph node swelling and tested positive for S. equi. The farm had been dealing with a respiratory infection prior to testing. These horses are NOT part of the racing industry.

The farm owner, working with their veterinarian, has instituted voluntary animal movement restrictions and biosecurity protocols. To see past and present Strangles cases in Ontario go to: https://www.oahn.ca/resources/ontario-equine-disease-alerts/ and enter the disease surveillance portal.
