Strangles (Streptococcus equi) has been confirmed in the District of Cochrane, Ontario. On February 11, 2026, a 2 year old Standardbred filly on a private farm was examined for a swollen head with enlarged lymph nodes. She tested positive for S. equi by PCR and is recovering. The yearling in the same pen as her had a purulent nasal discharge and is a suspected case. Two additional horses were exposed.
The farm owner, working with their veterinarian, has instituted voluntary animal movement restrictions and biosecurity protocols. To see past and present Strangles cases in Ontario go to: https://www.oahn.ca/resources/ontario-equine-disease-alerts/ and enter the disease surveillance portal
