Strangles (Streptococcus equi) has been confirmed at a farm in Grey County, Ontario. On May 8, 2026, a 1 year old Gypsy Vanner Filly developed Strangles, with clinical symptoms including multiple draining abscesses, persistent fever, weight loss and ultimately, death. The filly became sick after another horse on the property returned from a 90-day training session at a large training facility which recently had Strangles. 5 of the 6 horses on this private farm developed Strangles. One senior pony is receiving supportive treatment by the attending veterinarian

The facility owner has instituted voluntary quarantine. Two outbreaks in 2025 (Alert ID 4302 and 4304) are also epidemiologically linked to the facility in Alert ID 4920. To see past and present Strangles cases in Ontario go to: https://www.oahn.ca/resources/ontario-equine-disease-alerts/ and enter the disease surveillance portal.
