Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness (OMAFA)

Strangles (Streptococcus equi) has been confirmed in the Regional Municipality of Halton, Ontario. A 25 year old mare developed a thick nasal discharge and cough after sharing a paddock with 4 new horses. The mare tested positive for S. equi by PCR of the nasal discharge on May 20, 2025. The facility owner, working with their veterinarian, has instituted voluntary animal movement restrictions and biosecurity protocols.
