Strangles (Streptococcus equi) in Quebec, April 4, 2024

Strangles (Streptococcus equi) has been confirmed in Outaouais, Quebec. On March 28, 2024, a 20 year old Thoroughbred gelding presented with nasal discharge, submandibular abscess, and fever. On April 1, 2024, a second horse at the same facility, a 19 year old gelding, presented with nasal discharge and fever. Infection with S. equi was confirmed on April 4, 2024 for both horses. Neither horse was vaccinated against S. equi. Both horses are in voluntary quarantine.
