Strangles (Streptococcus equi) in Quebec, April 10, 2024

Strangles (Streptococcus equi) has been confirmed in Estrie, Quebec.

 

Horse 1: On April 2, 2024, this gelding presented with fever and reduced appetite. Infection with S. equi was confirmed on PCR on April 10, 2024. The horse is affected and alive. This horse was unvaccinated.

Horse 2: On April 6, 2024, this 10 year old gelding presented with fever and cough. Testing for infection with S. equi on PCR was inconclusive. The horse is affected and alive. This horse was unvaccinated.

Horse 3: On April 6, 2024, this 8 year old gelding presented with fever, nasal discharge, and cough. Infection with S. equi was confirmed on PCR on April 10, 2024. The horse is affected and alive. This horse was unvaccinated.

Horse 4: On April 6, 2024, this 9 year old gelding presented with fever, nasal discharge, and cough. Testing for infection with S. equi on PCR was not definitive but a probable positive. The horse is affected and alive. This horse was unvaccinated.

There are 10 additional suspected cases at the same facility.

 

There is only one affected site. The stable is under voluntary quarantine and biosecurity measures have been put in place by the attending veterinarians. These strangles cases followed the introduction at the end of March of a horse from the stable in Outaouais, Quebec, where strangles cases were previously reported (see alert here).
